In no particular order:

- A deer was browsing along the back lawn this morning. He looked up when I opened the door, but was not impressed, and neither started shouting "Run away!" nor proceeded to do so.

- Last night, [livejournal.com profile] shadesong posted my favorite Sandman quote, and moments later I realized my BNU reply on why da Vinci was still popular today segued naturally right into the quote.

- Yesterday, while I was getting ready to jump in the shower, I heard a loud noise and then watched traffic come to a crawl in the northbound lanes of the turnpike. Turns out one truck pushed another into the center barrier. Made all the news shows last night, but doesn't seem to have arrived on anything Googleable for a link.

- "Inertia is not a good excuse to stay with a bank" - or something very similar, noticed it this morning on a billboard, with a bank name so small I missed exactly what they were trying to sell. I'm wondering - with the plunging level of literacy - how many people driving by have a clue what "inertia" means? The cynic on my shoulder wonders how long it will be before banks are required to post large disclaimers about how switching your bank may impact your credit rating. Some creditors seem to frown upon low check numbers. I've actually seen signs posting that they won't accept low check numbers; some banks have responded by starting checking accounts at higher numbers. I'm wondering if refusal of credit or refusal to accept checks provides a good excuse for staying with a bank?

I have always started my checks

at 1000 for exactly that reason. I've had that practice since 1977.

Inertia...that's that pretty girl over at WalMart, right?

I stay with my bank simply because they give me free checking with direct deposit of my pay.

Nope, she works over at the bank. That's why I continue to stay with that bank! =)

In all seriousness, I stay with my bank because, unlike all the other area banks who buy each other out on a regular basis, they remain much more stable and constant, and they have yet to fudge their own rules to get more fees (I'm thinking, in particular, of a bank that ignored the overdraft protection I paid extra for and allowed the first overdraft fee to put me further in the negative and incur another overdraft fee which then earned me another overdraft fee... and all because they decided to process the withdrawals before the daily deposits - and there wasn't enough of the latter to offset the multitude of fees, which was going to lead them to perpetuate the problem.)

Given the fees that some banks charge vs. what other banks offer for free, inertia can be a pretty bad reason for staying with a bank. If given a choice between paying no fees each month and paying a fee just to have the account, plus a fee to do just about everything, no fees sound really good to me. I pay for checks once every year or two or three and that's it. I've always wondered why people with relatively small bank accounts stayed with Meridian and the various banks that took it over one after another (currently Wachovia).

On the subject of check numbers, when I've switched banks, I've always had them start my checks at the next hundred past where my old checks ended. I find that makes my record keeping easier.
