expectations
By Everett A Warren
August 14, 1992

trailing glow
of the stars
hiding belief beyond
unseeing fantasies
unravel wishes
there to find
expectations

from behind a knowing smile
eyes of infancy strive
to discover
constructing a world
with knowledge claimed
first creates
expectations

glimpsed from afar
across the bay
lost with salt spray and the tide
and then again
singing to darkness
rushing under pebbled beach
you capture
expectations

guided by times long past
echoes of moonbeam
caress the heart
fields of fallen hopes
smothered leaves
under snow of winter
leave unmet
expectations

Not that anyone on my flist likes renaissance faires or that sort of fantasy-type stuff, or folksy music with a medieval flare or really damn good guitarists*...

Of course, I'm hoping at least one of you who might be a member of any of those target audiences has yet to hear the music of Blackmore's Night.

Doubtful, but I can hope.

Anyway, here is Ritchie Blackmore, of Deep Purple and Rainbow, with his wife, Candice Night, and ensemble, performing Way To Mandalay, from the 2003 album Ghost of a Rose:

* Yes, I realize there might be one person or so on the ol' list who doesn't fit into at least one of those four categories.

It seems the median pay package for CEO's of the S&P 500 has dropped to a mere $7.6 million dollars.

Whatever are they going to do with such meager compensation for their efforts?

Article here.

For the record, as the owner of a company, I do think the folks running the show should be paid more than the workers. However, I also think that things would go a lot nicer all around if a wee little bit of fiscal restraint was shown. I don't think a hard and fast rule ~ "the highest compensation is no more than twice the lowest compensation" or something ~ would be a good thing to legislate, but something like that might be a good thing to follow in spirit.

we are the timekeepers
By Mina Ellyse Warren
May 1, 2009

if all the clocks
ceased their incessant
ticking tocking tracking
their gears ground down
teeth gnashed smooth
their gates of logic
no longer swinging
their lights dimmed
silicon sands scattered
their hands tied
no longer pointing
the time they kept
to themselves
inert
motionless
and then
as with the waves
to the pebble
washed away
for
still
the time passes
sweeping around
quiescent diodes
until they
wear to nothing
the pendulum
transfixed
is taken
by the tide
and the moment
edgertonian
now wavering
flowing
in turbulent seas
a faint memory
from
a
long lost past

While refreshing the mulch in my flower beds, I noticed that all of the ostrich ferns I planted back in July 2007 have spread out and are now popping up three or more sets of fiddleheads around the original plant. While the other ferns (Christmas, cinnamon, interrupted, marginal woodland, and royal) don't appear to be spreading themselves around as of yet, they do appear to be making a showing.

The mayapple looks to be sending up at least one additional stem, which means the possibility of two leaves (and thus, pretty soon, a flower, and, eventually, a fruit). I really need to get some more individual plants (or seeds) in, but for now I'm content to let it keep it's own pace ~ that area will be disrupted with waterfall and stream and bridge work someday (I'd say "soon", but it's more likely to be "later"!)

One of the bluebirds just zipped by, dipping down about ten feet from me, and then told me a great story before he flew off to the wife.

The foamflower appears to still be with us. I noticed a few leaves and one pouf of flowers; as with the mayapple, that's another one I need to help along if I want it to take a noticeable role in the forest floor.

The blueberries appear to be more developed in more areas then before. They used to be centralized in the woods along Spruce Alley, between our property and the neighbor's. For the past two years, you can find them all around, but now they're appearing in larger groups.
