Here's some heavy metal for you... Jim Matheos, guitarist and songwriter from the progressive metal band Fates Warning, oft thought of as a Queensryche copy, or, like Queensryche (who developed at nearly the same time, on the left coast instead of the right) was compared to Iron Maiden...

Released on Metal Blade Records, even.

Typical heavy metal here: violin, cello, and acoustic guitar (at most; sometimes it's just acoustic guitar).

Yep.

One of my mom's friends was friends with one of their mothers ~ probably Jim's, but we never found out ~ and her review of Fates Warning was: "I've heard their music, and all I can say is they're loud. I'm glad I don't let my boys listen to that."

This is from Jim's first solo album First Impressions:

This is Zoe on cello and Paul on violin, playing a little one-off piece...

Here's another tune from former Rasputina member Zoe Keating, a live recording of Sun Will Set, from her album One Cello X 16: Natoma (Amazon.com).

Returning to one of the themes started with Kronos Quartet and continued with Apocalyptica, here's a bowed string instrument playing something a little less than traditional...

Although I didn't use tape loops, I used to like to play around with a long digital delay and do all sorts of things from bizarre sound effects to backing rhythm tracks for soloing over. Technology has come a long way since those first digital delays, and now there are a number of artists using and abusing loops. This is an example of how one performer can use loops to good effect.

From Zoe Keating's album One Cello X 16: Natoma (Amazon.com), here is, well, one cello x 16, playing the song Tetrishead:

In other news, to follow up on discussions in the recent threads of Metallica covers, the new tune (YouTube) sounds good, recapturing some of the spirit of the old stuff. Discuss.
