Got Kiwis?

My eldest son and I traveled halfway across the state (and braved a near miss with Penn State football traffic) to get a couple of hardy kiwi vines... much adventurage getting them (or, at least, the bottom 6' or so of stems and their 2-3' rootballs) into the trunk and backseat of a smallish car, and even more fun getting them into the ground in the darkness, with a gentle November rain helping to make things even more interesting.

Digging them out went quite smoothly, especially using the wire cutters on the screen they clung to in combination with lots of loping of limbs. As several places recommend hacking them down to 4 or 5 buds every year, this is hardly a severe cutback for them.

Got some strange looks on the ride home - the entire backseat was looping with vines. Must have looked like the car was being taken over... =)

Once home, and in the dark and rain, we used the car's headlights to help guide us, and excavated two nicely sized pits (both of us thinking, in a confirmed independent study, of the scene in Young Frankenstein where they're out in the cemetery digging up their creature's body and Igor says "Could be worse...")

They're in the ground now, and, with a trellis in place before Spring growth, they should spiff up the wall of the garage quite nicely. The guy's on the left, nearest the porch, and the girl's on the right, nearest the driveway - and they've already found each other, so should remain quite happy!

Thanks much to Steve, over at the Pennsylvania Native Plant Society!
