I am now a Subaru owner. I even got to drive it last night - took Justin out for a spin. Deb drove it back from the dealer, and Rachel went with her, so Brandon's the only one that hasn't been for a ride in it yet. Somehow, I don't think he's very concerned. =)

Now we have to decide what to do with the Taurus - or, to name her properly, Bessie. One consideration is to give her to the fire department to play with. I can think of a few people who actually need a car, but we're not sure we can keep a clear conscious if we inflict her one someone as something that might be driven. That said, I suppose I need to ask my brother first, although I doubt Bessie would make it from here to Cow Hampshire. After that, if he passes, if anyone local is interested, owns a Nomex or other fireproof suit (hole in the gas tank, potential to rust off around the tank and drop it without advance notice) and doesn't mind brakes (or lack thereof) that squish more than a barrel o' cephalopods, I suppose I might be willing to sell it for a dollar - or, if I can't get the Alpine CD player out, for $150.

is it really that bad or can someone that's car handy fix it fairly cheaply?

We just put about $400 dollars into the brakes (one line rusted through, and another nearly so, both were replaced) and the gas tank (the strap rusted away, and started dragging).

There's a hole in the top of the gas tank, so you can't put more than quarter to half a tank in or it will spill out.

I have absolutely no confidence that the brakes will stop the car now - sometimes they grab, sometimes they sink.

The body has significant rust, and the floorpan is one step away from becoming a Fred Flintstone car (which will help when the brakes don't work!)

The steering is beginning to fail.

The transmission (it's third, I believe) is ready to go once more. It has trouble shifting, and sometimes gets stuck in gear.

It's got 176,000+ miles on it. I doubt the engine will live much longer.

For the past two or three years we've been getting warnings that it won't pass the next inspection, and our mechanic said "It's time to get a new car" the last time it was in. It's made after 1980 (1990, specifcially), so I won't work on it! =)

eeep...that's probably beyond my capabilities to have fixed (my uncle is a former mechanic and now is the service manager for a dealership)

well congrats on the new car! heh
