When Deb was pregnant with Justin - before we really knew it - we had absolutely no money, no medical insurance, and were not sure what we were going to do.

We were going to go to a Planned Parenthood clinic to get a free pregnancy test - not to schedule, or even really discuss, abortions or other solutions, just to find out that first step.

We canceled the appointment because of a bunch of idiot protesters, one of whom attempted to save fetal lives with an automatic weapon and an adult body count. We had people that were going to provide security for us, but we decided to go to a paid clinic - if we weren't on welfare at that point, we were soon afterward; and if we weren't at that point, my parents paid for the appointment.

Anyone who thinks violence, threats, bullets, and bombs are proper behavior for enforcing a religion based on love, free will, and being nonjudgmental is some combination of pure stupid and pure evil. Hell, anyone who thinks they need to enforce anything about the religion obviously skipped the book and just watched the movie.

Some good will come from those protesters outside a Philadelphia Planned Parenthood clinic, though... check out this, which I discovered courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] blackbyrd2

Hmmm... link still seemed to work for me:

http://www.ppsp.org/PledgePicket-index.asp

(ppsp.org is Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania)

Basically, they're allowing you to pledge a certain amount per protester (minimum of 10 cents), and they'll count the number of protesters every day in October and November, and average the number for your final total.

They'll also post signs letting the protesters know how much their presence is adding to the clinic's funding.

It worked this time. When I clicked on your LJ page, I got a 'this page can't be found' message.

Oh, I know PPSP. Remember that I was born and raised just outside of Philly in Ridley Township. :) Other places have done such pledges with protesters in the past. We were lucky in that we never had as many protesters as we might have had. Most of them, when they came to Boulder (and they were imports -- usually some group would come in from elsewhere, start in Denver, then drive to us -- clinics in Denver would call us to warn us when the groups left them), they usually went to the Boulder Abortion Clinic. That doctor, Warren Hern, is one they want to kill, alas. (He's on their lists.) He does late-term abortions and spoke to the US Senate against the whole idea of banning late-term abortions, trying to explain to them that partial-birth abortions really don't exist and are a media term.
