Had a good time yesterday, although a lot of folks were no-shows. [livejournal.com profile] kk1raven was there, and not only tasted a sassafras leaf, but also got to see some of our local, erm, wildlife - a stick bug, an assassin bug, a handful (good luck trying to hold on to 'em!) of spiders, and Tanis the cat-that-chases-bears. A penguin also made an appearance - we watched the (very much) out-of-season "A Wish for Wings that Worked" because, well, that Opurt is one cool penguin. The metallic gold spider we saw on Saturday in the sweet birch along the garage could not be located.

Also seen on Saturday: I was out on the porch with Brandon, and a pileated woodpecker (wingspan about 30 inches or so) called out from somewhere by the neighbors yard, then flew over the meadow and - if I had my camera with me - posed on an oak tree for a couple of minutes before flying up over the lawn and over the garage, nearly over our heads as we walked off the porch for a closer look. Couldn't find him in the back yard, not sure if he hung out for a bit back there or just moved along.

The praying mantis was still down along the bottom of the driveway Saturday, but I couldn't locate him yesterday, so couldn't point him out.

Since I don't usually put the grill away until long after most sane folks, another cookout may be possible, but I'm also thinking of some kind of dinner thing. Will have to put some thought into it as most of the house specialties (Deeper n' Ever, Stuffed Shells, Rusty Radiator, Dirty Rice Pie, Tequilla Lime Chicken) involve large quantities of cheese.

My ex-step-father never put the grill away. He'd be out on the deck in the middle of winter using it. He liked to make french toast for breakfast on the grill on weekends, amongst other things. I'm not sure that he qualifies as "sane" though, since I think the reason he used the grill so much when he and my mother were together was that he couldn't manage to eat knowing that there was a "mess" from preparing the mesl in the kitchen.

I found a little yellow spider in my car the other day. Lemon yellow. He drove to the Mall with me and back. Almost made it out of the cup holder twice. He was a fierce little thing. You know how they go into protect mode? Front legs splayed in an almost crab like manner? When I gently disengaged the web he was using to haul himself out of the cup holder, he played dead quite convincingly...and it was a very warm day.

He lay, unmoving at the bottom of my cup holder until I got home. I was pretty sure he was dead. I scooped him out with a sales receipt. He came back to life and glared at me defiantly in full attack mode. Kind of like a kitten hissing at you. He was deposited on some goldenrod I have growing in the front yard and has not been seen since.

I should like to see a golden one.
