... shipping rates.
... anything that is transported by gas-powered vehicles (which covers everything else.)

One thing gas prices aren't likely to raise: salaries.

High prices were on the way before Katrina; it just made it sooner and worse.
We'll have to go back to depression era habits: make do with what you've got, fix it up or do without.

True enough - gas prices were being raised because of fears that something going on in that other gulf might not go so well, not to mention the bottom line fact that there's only a finite amount of the black gooey stuff, and there's a lot more demand for it as well.
