A year or so ago, National Geographic had a feature on New Orleans that starts off with a fictional account about how the city gets destroyed when a hurricane hits it full-force.

From the article: When did this calamity happen? It hasn't - yet. But the doomsday scenario is not far-fetched. ... "It's not if it will happen," says University of New Orleans geologist Shea Penland. "It's when."

Looks "when" could very well be "Monday, August 29, 2005".

My friends are in Baton Rouge, including [livejournal.com profile] gwynraven - who writes about the hurricane here - as well as a couple of people from the East Baton Rouge school district that I know through work, and hopefully, all will be well with them, their families, not to mention the few (hundred thousand to a million or so) people that I don't know who are in that area.
