Proto-Kaw - Skont
Mar. 23rd, 2009 09:00 amThe other day,
galdrin mentioned that Kerry Livgren in past tense, and said he missed prog rock...
Well, here is Mr. Livgren and crew ~ more on that in a moment ~ with a track that can be found on the bonus live DVD included with 2006's The Wait of Glory
. Proto-Kaw is pre-Kansas, or, maybe more accurately, Kansas Mk. I revisited. These are not the guys most folks knew as Kansas ~ Kerry excepted ~ but they were the first round of the band from way back when, now gathered together again, with two albums of new music.

Date: 2009-03-24 12:10 pm (UTC)I just ... miss those huge sweeping thematic albums, ya know? Like "Tarkus" and "Thick as a Brick" and "In Search of the Lost Chord" and "Tales from Topographic Oceans" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "War of the Worlds."
That kind of work is far and few between in these days of teenage angsty-rock, sensuous cradle-robbers, and rapping flight attendants.

Speaking of which, huge sweeping thematic albums, you may want to give some of the following a listen:
Glass Hammer - The Inconsolable Secret
Bob Catley - Middle Earth
Gary Hughes - Once and Future King, Pt. 1
Not so much on the thematic bits, but definitely on the prog aspect:
Magellan - Impossible Figures
Flower Kings - Rainmaker
Pallas - The Cross & The Crucible
Essentially, you want to poke around the catalog of Inside Out records... =)
Also, on the subject of Kansas, there's a release from 2000 Somewhere to Elsewhere
If you like things a bit more metallic, I can point you to dozens of thematic albums ~ they're my specialty... if you missed the Ayreon videos I posted back in February, give them a listen; that's a "band" (i.e. Arjen Anthony Lucassen) that gathers different vocalists and performs sci fi themed albums.
