... in response to [livejournal.com profile] straif's posting of the heavy metal hurdy gurdy (Eluveitie, performing "Inis Mona")

Although, to be fair, Nightwish is not exactly performing a metal tune... this steampunkish video barely even registers as "rock"... just an excellent tune. Can't believe this video has been out since April and I didn't catch it until today. Now I'm wishing I picked up the album back when it was first released... maybe I'll get it for Kissmas... and, of course, this tune reawakens my own desire to get a set of Uilleann pipes... someday. I love the sound of the drums on this, too...

Damn ... that was awesome. Visually and musically too.

*heads off to learn more about them*

If you like Marco's voice - he tends to have less of a role with Nightwish. He's also in the band Tarot, so you might want to check them out as well.

Cool song, cool video. Thanks for posting it.

David Daye makes a relatively inexpensive Uilleann pipe kit. Seems like it was under $200 last time I looked (which has been a few years.)

Much welcomes to you! Glad you liked it.

I checked the pipe kits, and they're a bit more now, and also not available for order at the moment.

I think I might have linked to these before, but I really like the look of this engraved set by Kirk Lynch and Gil Hocker. That's just a beautiful instrument.

Even more than that, I'd like a set by Seth Gallagher. A wooden flute or two wouldn't be turned down. Sadly, these instruments are priced several orders of magnitude out of my existing budget.

I've heard good things about Kirk Lynch's pipes, and Seth Gallagher's are widely regarded as very high quality. I was drooling over the thought of Gallagher pipes back when I got my half set, but I couldn't afford them.

You've got a set?

You'll have to bring 'em along to the Labor Day cookout! =)

I've got a David Daye practice set and a Bruce Childress half set. I've fooled around with them a bit and can play a couple tunes, but I'm still very much in the beginners' camp.

If I go to a Labor Day cookout, I'll try to remember to bring 'em along.

Looks cool. The fire ring confuses me. The rest makes perfect sense.

It's a ritual thing, whenever you perform in a circle on a rocky coast in northern Europe.

Wow, I haven't even thought of them in quite some time. Thanks for posting! It's a beautiful song. I think my brain is telling me I've watched too much Stargate lately though...the opening shot of the band had me thinking "Wraith, Wraith!". Ah well. :)

Well, I've covered Stargate with a video before! =)

Okay, so that was the movie, not the series...
