The Final Pieces
by Everett A Warren
February 28, 1991

I hear you whisper in my ear,
I hear your tears strike the pillow while we sleep.
I hear your voices climb into a choir,
Weaving melodies of sadness that speak of dreams to be discovered.

The final pieces of the puzzle fit together,
With unassuming eyes I see the scheme of things that should not be.
Glittering lies light up the night like so many souls that cry to be free,
Like a candle they fade into the wind, and obscuring smoke rises in the night.

In the dawn they stand as empty-souled as only the lifeless can,
Bowing to the Elder Ones, consumed by fires that linger in their hearts,
And their minds crumble into dust, spontaneous eruption of irrationality,
Forsaken by the Gods, petrified reminders of the thing once known as man.

And in the morning they shall come to repent their sins,
And the Angels shall sing of glories and trumpets shall ring triumphantly,
And in the end they shall come to rest upon a plane of fears,
And they shall know no sound but the beating of their hearts.

The final pieces fall in their places,
The edges align and synthesise,
The final peace rests upon them now...

And so with a kiss upon your lips I whisper faint goodbyes,
And you turn softly as I set the blankets on your shoulders.
And in the morning the fires faded, even the embers have grown colder,
And sunlight casts its warmth upon you as I never was able.

The final pieces fall in their places,
The edges align and synthesise,
The final peace shall rest my soul,
The final peace shall reassure,
The final piece brings solitude once more... for how long?
