Or the eating of it.

I'm going to a meeting for the CSA tonight - it will be at Flow, which is technically scheduled as closed on Mondays. No surprise, though, as the folks that own the farm are involved in the restaurant - which serves locally grown and raised foods.

So it's really the scheduled time to discuss the plan to sign up to regularly pick up locally grown green (and other assorted colors).

But I suppose "wearin' o the green" is close enough. I will have a green man on my shirt, anyway! =)

Is this a family project? Is it similar to a CO-OP? Do you grow your own stuff as Aunt Connie & Uncle Bob did years ago?

There's some slight variations to CSAs, but basically you buy a share of the produce from the farm for a certain term. Some CSAs include a must-work-the-farm clause, others - like this one - you're basically buying on subscription. The farm has cash up front and some guaranteed customers, and you support local agriculture and get food out of the deal.

In this case, from mid May through November, we'll get a bag of veggies and a loaf or two of fresh organic bread every week.

Ooo- you get bread? Coolness! We do have a work-the-farm aspect- 6 hours/share- but we're hoping to get that taken care of before the end of the month.

Apart from that, ours has options for a lot of other things, but they're different farms and farmers.

Yeah, we'll have the options to get grass fed beef, whole chickens, or special order lamb, pork, organic cheeses, and more - and those are through other farmers.

Forgot to mention the other big benefit: buying local keeps the money local. Sometimes you might save a buck or two (or lots at Evil*Mart), but you actually lose more that way. Instead of sending the dollars you do spend far away and spreading it thin around the world, often quite literally, you're keeping it in your local economy.

(I'm including this here just for completions sake, not so much directing it at you - that'd be pretty much preaching to the choir! =)
