Yesterday Evening

ellyssianRain held off, so I prepared a bunch of whiskey burgers and started the grill. Took Brandon for a walk around the yard, and enjoyed a bit of rain that seemed as if it might actually amount to something. Turned off the grill and started the broiler. The rain promptly stopped, having thwarted our efforts. The broiler was taking a bit long - electric ovens are fine, but the gas broilers seem much more effective than the electric ones - so, since the rain had stopped, we moved back outdoors to finish off the burgers.
While putting the grill away after dinner, I decided to give the string trimmer a whirl. It had completely failed to start last year, and was still sitting with a full tank of year-old gas. First try, it burbled a bit, which was more than we had from it last year. Second try, a bit more so. Third try, and complete surprise, it fired up and ran. I went in and grabbed ear plugs, then sent Justin upstairs for my clear safety glasses (the ones I usually wore for the job are darkly tinted, and, even though we didn't get any rain, it was dark and gloomy.) Trimmed all around the foundation, on the sand mound, around the elderberry, down along the banks of the Rachel River, up along the Stone Stream, and around the herb and vegetable garden (mustard has sprouted; scallions starting to sprout.) Got a pretty good arm and upper body workout, between swinging the trimmer around and dealing with its vibrations. Always reminds me of the scene in Overboard where Goldie Hawn is recovering from using the chainsaw - bub-bub-bub-bub-bub...
