Justine Larbalestier's post on Scrivener convinced me to check it out, and I haven't looked back:

I've been using OpenOffice at home, and, although I have it here at work, I just use Word because corporate bows to Micro$oft.

OO.o works great for most things, and I like to blame its cumbersome bits on trying to keep up with the Wordses. One thing I don't like about it on OSX is that the Aqua interface isn't available yet (outside of a beta that they didn't seem to have much confidence in), and it drives me nuts to switch between the flower-C to copy in every other app and the X Windows ctrl-c.

Not having access to Scrivener, as I don't use Mac machines, I found this alternative that I've been loving so far:

http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter4.html

It's 100% free, and exports to .rtf so you can still do your editing and cleaning up in OO.org (which I also use and love to death).

Not use Macs? NOT USE MACs?

Oh, you're using Linux, right? =)

I don't do much with graphics, so Mac machines really don't fit into my lifestyle (or my pocketbook, oiy!). My laptop is an Acer Aspire, my PC is a Compaq (though I dont' know the model off-hand). So, sadly, I'm a windows user. LOL My roommate's trying to make me switch to Linux, though.

I remember making fun of the goofy little computer (that would be the first Mac) when it came out. After all, I was a serious programmer with an engineering bent - one of two guys to graduate who did not specialize in BASIC (we did Fortran and Pascal, along with DEC PDP-11 assembler and, for fun, machine language).

Then I played a game or two on it just to goof off. Next thing I knew, I was designing logos for the music store where I worked - copying, pixel by pixel, logos for Ibanez, Tama, Fender, Ludwig, Korg, and everything else we carried. A friend and I even did a two piece drum set and the cover of Judas Priest's Hero, Hero compilation - all pixel by pixel in black & white.

I've since worked on every flavor of Windows (no matter what they say, it's still clunky ol' MS-DOS at its core) since then, and, for the last ten years, on UNIX and, eventually, Linux. I'd run a UNIX or Linux system if I needed it or couldn't afford a Mac, otherwise I'm mostly loyal, until something better comes along. It's been close to two dozen years, and the industry hasn't done better yet! =)

If you can handle the configurations on Linux, that'd be your best bet. Especially if you can con force ask your roommate to help you out.

The only problem I potentially see with switching to Linux is that I worry about programs that weren't designed to run with it. OpenOffice, obviously will, and I'm 99.999% sure yWriter will, but I don't believe Poser does, and I work with that a fair bit, when I do any kind of visual work at all. ^^; Then there's the issue of MP3 players...

...No, let me cut the BS excuses. When it comes down to it, I'm scared to change programs. I'm used to the ones I have (the OS, my messengers, etc) and I don't necessarily want to lose them. ^^; Heck, it took forever for the roomie to get me to try OpenOffice. (Yes, that's kind of shaming to admit. LOL)

That's the beauty of computers - no matter what OS you use, it - and everything on it - changes faster than you need it to. =)
