The Day We Stopped the Rain

It is black and white:
a binary system that
does not compute.
Weather control
the intention,
and with half a century
of processing power
predictions are still
a matter of fantasy.
How were we to know
that as high-tech failed in its design
the mechanical coils of industry
wrapped tight around the dream.
Aerosols altering the atmosphere
and petrochemicals bringing rainbow hues,
shining in the sludge
as the sky remains dry.
It would be a classic,
a cautionary tale,
but caution was thrown to the wind -
it lost the battle with the breath of industry,
lungs filled with smog,
it cowers now alone, unheeded,
parched for thirst
and dying.
