More planting yesterday - started the foundation planting with a pair of Juniperus chinensis 'Sea Green' to the right and left of the entryway, raising them up a few inches with some top soil, and liberal amounts of mulch; also mulched the kiwis. A lot of the major backbone shrubs will be going in this year in such a fashion. Once they're in, I'll fill the intervening space with top soil and mulch, add a field stone border, and, eventually, supplant/replace the mulch with some low native groundcovers.

The National Arbor Day Foundation Spring order arrived Thursday. Early in the morning we got the bareroot trees into buckets of water, and in the afternoon we planted them. Destroyed a pitchfork after clearing spots for the first 7-8 trees - thankfully, there's a 10 year warranty, because a 5 hour lifetime for a $40 tool just is not right. Planted 5 Eastern Hemlock, 2 American Holly, 2 American Beech, 2 American Sweetgum (Justin's choice), 2 Southern Magnolia (Rachel's choice), 2 Forsythia, a River Birch (planted streamside, so it will be happy provided it gets a chance to do so enough to grow out of the deer's clipping range), a Quaking Aspen, a Red Maple, and a Lacebark Elm.
