For those who don't check up on things over the weekend, a report about the hawk watch and dinner on Saturday - including links to pictures - can be found here, along with related recipes for Roasted Tomato, Pepper, and Onion and Fajitas & Salsa.

As pointed out earlier today, rather indirectly, there are many deer and very few cougars in these here parts. Yesterday, every time you'd look in the yard, you could find a deer or three. They really need to know what predators are like, because, obviously, I am not one in their book. The more they eat the things I plant, the more I almost start to wonder what they taste like.

Speaking of plants and eating, Justin and I really enjoyed the harvest of the kiwi. The hardy kiwi - a Siberian native, so hardy means something - has smaller fruit and is allegedly sweeter. It's supposed to be done cooking brewing ripening in September, and I tried one of the few that showed up last year, and found it to be harder and quite sour. These ones were a lot softer, for the most part, and those that were soft were sweeter than grapes. Yum!

While Justin was starting the car and scraping the frost from the window, I gazed around at the stars - even with the garage light blinding me, I could still pick out brazillions and brazillions of stars. Really makes you wonder what people were thinking when they light up a whole damn city and make themselves the focus of the universe, blocking out all but a handful of lights in the sky...

Well, I was afraid you were going to say you spotted a cougar in the yard.

BTW: time to teach Justin car lore? Workings, choices, tires, engine sizes etc? I retained some lessons from my Dad from that age: when to adjust the mirrors, how the engine works...okay, I don't remember that, in fact refused to learn it, in fact. But I think Justin would learn it; i bet he's ready to learn more than starting a car and scraping off frost. You have an A-ONE son, ya know?

No, but when I told Tika and Tanis about [livejournal.com profile] kk1raven's discussion about cougars being released by the state to reduce the number of deer (they're not) the cats reaction was: "Yeah, I wish... can't expect us to chase the deer off. We're busy enough with the rabbits and chipmunks and mice and dogs and skunks and racoons and bears and orangutans and breakfast cereals."

What do you mean, few cougars? Don't you know that after twenty years of the PGC releasing them by the truckload, there are now enough to make it hard for hunters to get their share of the deer. (g,d & r)

I am sooooo sick of hearing that story.

I only have two wanna-be cougars in my yard, and I know for a fact the PGC didn't release them there. I bet that lady wouldn't believe it, though! =)

Do they have collars? If so, that would clinch it. She's sure the cougars are released by the PGC because they have radio collars.

On a related note, I was forced to stop at a used bookstore when I was out in Dillsburg yesterday and I found a book on Florida panthers for $3.

Of course! I forgot about those collars!

They'd be needed to let PGCHQ know their position, as well as to allow them to call in backup or airstrikes on particularly large and unruly groups of rodents deer.
