Book Three and Four

ellyssianBook #3: A Series of Unfortunate Events book 1: A Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket
I believe we actually own a copy of this book: if so, it's in a box in the garage awaiting the construction of library shelves sometime in 2006 (or 2007, at the rate we're not moving on this year's construction project). However, because I sometimes get bored working late for absolutely no extra money, and because the Poetry Circle at the Moravian Book Shop doesn't even unofficially start until 6:30pm, I have found myself, for the past three second Fridays, sitting in the Childrens/Teens section of the store, waiting for other poets to arrive. And, conveniently (which, in its use here, means very much on purpose) my chair happens to be next to the A Series of Unfortunate Events display rack. On the most recent Friday, I not only finished A Bad Beginning but I also got about halfway through The Reptile Room.
Book #4: The Dark Tower book 4: Above the Veil by Garth Nix
Continuing a trend of reading books intended for an audience at least half my age (which shall continue even further with books 5-6 of this series, and then Firebringer, which were all part of my son's Christmas presents this year, and which he has already finished), I am suddenly able to recapture some ground I spent (and wisely so) on the leisurely pace of the Dunsany. Two nights, I believe, of several hours a piece reading time. Not a stretch of any skills, but an enjoyable read. With all the back-history of fantasy and science fiction, it is harder to do something truly unique (or retain a readership whilst doing so) but this series is fairly interesting. Perhaps not worthy as an adult read in and of itself, but certainly suitable for a younger audience, and then, of course, hijacked for your own enjoyment after it's past the kiddo's bedtime.
