Row, row, row your boat...
Sep. 4th, 2006 03:41 pmPaddle, actually. It wasn't a rowboat, it was a canoe.
Refer to the map (PDF).
For my birthday, much earlier in the season, Deb and the kids gave me a certificate good for canoe rental, which expired at the end of their season (i.e. today.) We started off at the rental beach (across from the water ski area, in the cove "downstream" from the beach.
We paddled around the swimming area and into the Pine Run cove. We kept to the right and went under Pohopoco drive between the rightmost bridge support and the shore - barely making it over some of the rocks there. Shallow draft good, yep, yep.
Further down that inlet, it was very peaceful. I had Justin stop paddling, and we floated along, paddling mostly to steer. I suppose it was right around Jefferson Street - no sign of any road from the water - but we went over the "second bridge" the lady at the rentals was warning those renting motorized boats about. She had said "the second bridge you won't see" - that's because it was 1-20' under the surface; a reminder that Beltzville has the -ville because where people now zoom around on Jetski and so forth, people once lived, although 60-some feet lower in elevation. We made it over a couple of shallow areas, had to push off one to avoid likely bottoming out, and made it almost to the rocky falls where Pine Run flows into the lake.
After coming back out of that cove we nosed into the next three down the line and then headed back. There were a lot of boats out, most going much faster than us - so we spent a good deal of time turning to face the waves and avoid getting swamped. Most of my canoe-time has been spent on rivers, the rest on Lake Cochituate. I've pulled canoes up rapids, gone down waterfalls and through rapids, levered them over trees, slid downhill into a river, and all kinds of other things - but these were the heaviest seas I'd ever faced. Consequently, I am quite sore.
But much fun was had!

Although we ran into hardly any great whites or crocodiles on our trip, we did spend the time in the outdoors, and observed several wild animals - serving, in some form, as a bit of a memorial to Steve Irwin.
