Keith R.A. DeCandido: Dragon Precinct
This is, at its core, a basic high fantasy novel. It has the feel of a good, fun D&D adventure. Or a D&D novel, except better written, and certainly better edited than the last half dozen or so TSR produced novels (I think it was still TSR when I gave up on them...)
This is, at its core, a good police procedural. Sure, it's in a fantasy world, but there isn't the whole meet-in-the-tavern, go-save-a-damsel-in-distress type of D&D thing going on. Here, they meet in a tavern when the shift is over, they cause some trouble, and they solve the case.
The characters are likeable and believable, and they have the endearing trait that's good for a long fictional life: you really want to find out what they're going to do next.
This was a fun read, and it will certainly be a re-read in the future.
