Book #17: A Series of Unfortunate Events book 2: The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket

Well, then... finished this one in only two sittings, whilst waiting for the Poetry Circle at the Moravian Book Shop to start - and I was worried that I would forget where I had left off, as there were two months I wasn't able to make it between the first time and last night. No worries, though. I picked it up and it as if it had been minutes since I had set it down.

I know some have said that the first few books are weak and they get better, but maybe I'm just too positive (I remember, once, a friend who is a Jehovah's Witness getting frustrated with me for "finding good in everything"), but I've been having a blast with these first two, and, indeed, started into the third.

I was wondering how things would progress - knowing, of course, that each book is going to have an "unfortunate" ending, as Olaf gets away once again - and I was afraid things would stagnate quickly. The orphans, however, learned from their mistakes, and even the poor banker seemed to make *some* progression.

At some point, I have to get these books, as both of the older kids would definitely enjoy them. I'm sure the youngest would find them tasty as well, accompanying his meal with a Sunnyesque comment or three.

Rain, as my poem a few days ago indicated, does not exist.

It rained several times last week - or, at least, it did according to those people who stand in front of maps and say: "This is what it will do" Imagine, for a moment, if other careers were allowed the same range of accuracy: "Uh, yeah. Well, this program may calculate daily attendance. It has a chance of determining what the average daily attendance value will be. It might actually be able to tell if a student had an excused absence or an unexcused one. However, when you run it next week, it will most likely take twice as long, without actually doing anything."

Today, it is a downpour, thunderstorms. In other words, it's sunny and warm, with no wind to move things around.

Given that it was raining so hard, we planted an herb (mostly) and vegetable (partially) garden today. Rachel chose locations, all along the top of the driveway. We tilled the very dry soil, removed rocks, and added in some moist topsoil. We will have - should any of these mostly two year old seed packets decide to produce - chives (three servings, as it were), garlic chives, sweet basil, *Italian* sweet basil, lemon basil, chervil, oregano, scallions, peppers, mustard, squash, gourds, and watermelon, with a backdrop of corn.

Rain finally arrived. Didn't last long. Bunch of lightning. One burst sounded like a shot, followed by an explosion. Hit about a mile or two away.
