Of Cats and Crickets and Other Things

Woodsmoke in the air
and a fiddle tune as well,
weaving around the curling smoke,
dancing a jig while the rain is away.

The Queen Anne's lace,
with regal grace,
rises above the fields of clover;
and the ferns nod solemnly from the shadows.

Cotton candy or caramel leaves
float on the breeze through the katsura tree
much less subtle than the lemony mittens
and root beer roots of the sassafras that line the woods.

Clothespin angels hover from foxglove to iris to hosta
ruby throats sipping nectar
while black as night the monarchs flutter by
over stone and stream to the meadow beyond

Crickets chirp but none too loudly
for he of the red breast and she of his bride
patrol the grasses most diligently
when they're not out on a limb singing each others praises

Scolding from under the ferns
in curious brown habit
a monk with a chip on his shoulder
and a tail raised high berating up and down

Maine coon curled up in sleep
ignoring the little fellow's breach of wisdom
dreaming of chasing Mother Bear again
and if he should catch her, what would he do then?
