Snowed In

The plow just came and cleared the street - they came by a couple of hours ago and gave it a first pass, but that was still about 30-40' from our driveway.

Speaking of which, I worked from home today, which was no fun. Today was my team lunch for December, and we were going to Applebees, and I've been dying for some BBQ ribs... mmmm, free food always tastes Even BettererTM than that which you pay for... Oh, well, I switched to the team lunch on the 21st, at Gregory's, a local steak place that is, IMO, overrated.

We cleared a single path down to the curb for the trash - which I don't think they've picked up yet, same guys on the trash crew and snow plow crew and all that - in the pre-dawn hours, and that took us well over an hour. The fact that snow was still falling at 2" an hour (according to the weatherman; seemed much faster than that) didn't help.

In all, we received 10-12", with drifts up to 4' - although those seem to be isolated to certain trees in the woods, most places didn't drift that bad.

We currently have about 2/3 of the driveway - roughly 6000 square feet of snow, with another 3000 to go, so, yeah, if you haven't seen my Amazon.com wish list, feel free to stop by and order the snowblower for us (it's a medium priority, but I might up that; if you sort by high cost to low cost, it will be near the top of the list! =) Justin, Deb, and I - not to mention the single shovel we continue to abuse despite it having died last Spring - will thank you greatly!

Camera bits on your wish list

Rather than the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, you may want to look at the EF 28mm f/1.8, EF 85mm f/1.8 and the EF 100mm f/2. If you choose just two, it will cost less. All three will cost about the same as the 24-70, and if one breaks, you'll be out less money. If somebody's gift shopping, they'll be more likely to drop $400 on a lens than $1200. In addition, they're all three USM and FT-M, so they'll auto-focus quickly, and you still have full time manual focus.

Although the 24-70 is an L-series lens, I'd still recommend the primes. Eliminating the zoom variable tends to force one to think about composition. Besides, 24mm in front of the APS-C-sized sensor on the EOS 20D isn't all that wide, about 38mm on a full-frame.

Coolness!

I put the three on the list - I picked the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L because it was the "recommended" one - I'm certainly not an expert.

My current camera is 35mm film and fully automatic, with the exception of a "chip" that allows you to control the flash settings, and a lock-focus button. It actually takes pretty decent photos (especially when mangled by our scanner - should be even better as I plan to get CDs made by the camera shop,) but for what I want to do I need more flexibility.

Most of what I plan to take will be various nature scenes - don't know if you've checked out my Flickr photostream, but that will give you some idea of what I'm interested in. The biggest drawback with my current camera - other than manual controls - is it seems, by and large, incapable of taking a decent close up. The stickbug is actually the only one that came out - a number of others weren't even worthy of the paper they were printed on!

I'm open to any advice or guidance!

I do have a few tips for moving from film to digital and photography in general.
  • Treat your digital shots as if they cost you $1.00 each.
  • Slow down and think.
  • If you're going to spend the money on a camera that allows you to fiddle with exposure, you owe it to yourself to learn about exposure.
  • Read Photo.net
  • If you care about your pictures, keep backups.

That third point is something I value highly in everything I do - I generally have a habit of getting so involved in what I throw myself into that others come to me as an expert in short order.

Wow. I wish we'd gotten something like that. Anything but the 1 inch and four hours of rain we ended up with. Such a cop-out.

I didn't even know Amazon sold plants until I checked out your wishlist. Hmm. They're like the Costco or BJ of the Internet over there.

They don't - but they do let you order through certain other companies, which lets me put them on the list.

I was very surprised - just nosing around when I discovered them!

They're really really tiny, so you wants lots of 'em, yep yep yep!

I think that "billyuns and billyuns" is actually the smallest size they come in. I haven't used them - don't have a garden sprayer - but I've been using GardensAlive! products for a few years now, and I'm pretty impressed.

Two rounds of Turf Alive III and Fall Lawns Alive and one of Spring Lawns Alive, and the garbage dirt the builders trucked in and packed down is showing signs of life - and not breaking as many shovels when I attempt to dig through it!

Brazillions and brazillions.

I've heard of them, but not looked into them seriously. Maybe next year, if I am yard inclined (which I usually am. Unless I am slammed at work, like this year.) I'll try them.

Oh, now Nightsky has put on Van Morrison. I must go, so I can sing along...loudly...as the volume is loud enough to cover my not being able to carry a tune in a bucket...
