Wrapping up the Philly Funk bit while continuing the R&B/funk set and starting a wee little set of Pick Up the Pieces, we have another clip from that same venue as the first two PFA videos.

This is a great tune for the horn section. It's stuff like this that gets me wanting to pick up the bass...

It's not the original performance, but it is the original performers ~ you can hear this tune on the album titled (this is quite a shock, really) Pick Up the Pieces. However, you can listen to an MP3
of a version Rhino Records released on vinyl.

Here's Philadelphia Funk Authority with the Rufus and Chaka Khan's Once You Get Started (MP3), which can be found on the album The Very Best of Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan.

From there, PFA segues into a tune co-written by Steve Cropper and Eddie Floyd, Knock On Wood (MP3), which can be found on the album Knock on Wood: Best of Eddie Floyd:

Knock On Wood is probably one of my favorite tunes, and Cropper is one of my favorite guitarists and songwriters. If you're thinking you heard of Steve Cropper before, it just may be on account of him acting the role of Steve "The Colonel" Cropper in The Blues Brothers. Not much of a stretch for him to be playing tunes like Soul Man (which some sources list him as writing, others don't; my take on it: listen to the guitar riff: he co-wrote the tune and that's that! =).

If you really can't get enough of "The Colonel", check out his instrumental performance of Knock On Wood (MP3) from the album Jammed Together with Albert King and Pops Staples. Seriously good stuff.

If you can't part from the vocals, give a listen to the album Raise Your Hand by percussionist Pancho Sanchez. Not only does Cropper play guitar on Knock On Wood (MP3), but he jumps in on at least one other tune, and the whole album is an excellent blend of Latin rhythms with R&B.

It's funny, because I added this tune to the play list way back in late July or early August. At the time, I was planning to go see the Philadelphia Funk Authority at MusikFest. It's now nearly December, and most of my R&B and funk discs have been put away for warmer weather.

So it's a rather cool day out there, but we're going to get the funk out (okay, there's the link to yesterday's video... =) and heat things up a bit.

It's not the best video ~ lots of audience chatter, kind of broadsides the first tune instead of starting at the beginning and cuts out on the second, limited camera angles ~ yet it still gives you an idea what PFA is all about.

As for Brick House, you can grab the original tune (MP3) as heard on the Commodores collection Brick House. There's also an MP3 of Lionel Richie's performance of Brick House. Skin Tight (MP3), by the Ohio Players, is from the album surprisingly titled Skin Tight.
