(with a lithp)

Yeth, that'th right! I'm Thor! =)

The moving of [livejournal.com profile] dragonflypug went smoothly. Arms and legs didn't turn into Jell-O and the back didn't start hollering and moaning and groaning until most of the truck (a 24 footer) was unloaded. In fact, I think they waited until the last four or so items were left. Of course, the last two items were a love seat and a couch... oy!

I didn't get the manufacturer of the couch, but I may ask Deb to ask [livejournal.com profile] dragonflypug. These things were absolutely the lightest bits of furniture I've ever had the pleasure to move, and I mean that with all due respect and not any of the sarcasm that generally springs up during a move. My brother-in-law's couch, on the other hand, is the heaviest one. I am sure, at it's core, it is filled with heavy metals. This set probably has helium inside it. Seriously. You know U-Haul's "Mom's Attic"? [livejournal.com profile] aequitaslevitas and I hauled the loveseat down from there without any strain whatsoever. I had pretty much tossed it up there, and, if it weren't for the bulk, probably could have done it myself.

Rachel helped out, too ~ her first time helping us with a move (other than our own, although she was only about five or so for that one!) While we were loading up, her job was Pug Patrol ~ she kept Ike in line (or vicey versa), but she ran a lot of stuff inside for the unloading.

How I'll Spend the Day After Black Friday
Moving [livejournal.com profile] dragonflypug. Again. It's been almost a year since the last time, I think... =)

Busy weekend.

In short: Friday, hosted a couple of bikers. Saturday, invented music. Sunday, moved mountains. Monday, cookout!

My brother and one of his brothers stopped by on their way across the country. Talked a bit, ate some food from Trainers Inn, and looked at their route. They spent Saturday night with my grandmother, and were in the Smokey Mountains for Sunday night. I expect there somewhere between there and Phoenix at the moment.

The Lefty Valdez Funk University Band had a practice session on Saturday and new & existing tunes were worked on, and a brand-spanking new tune was created.

Sunday, Justin and I relocated some two thousand pounds (conservatively estimated) of books from the garage to the cellar. Lots of other stuff went downstairs or upstairs or moved horizontally to make it all happen. My guitar rack was de-spidered and set up and still sounds as great - and, unfortunately, as unreliable - as ever.

With some research, we discovered M-Audio keyboards. They have a couple of exceptional instruments, and, conveniently, they're reasonably priced. Justin's saving for them, and I've added them to his wish list. I was guiding him towards their simpler semi-weighted digital piano, but as soon as he heard the vibes and strings on the hammer-weighted model he made up his mind. The 61-key MIDI controller would be a later addition that, when paired with a computer (a laptop, most likely), would give him exceptional capabilities for a variety of sounds.

Monday, we enjoyed the company of [livejournal.com profile] noone234, [livejournal.com profile] kk1raven, [livejournal.com profile] thefrogger, my future sister-in-law-in-law [livejournal.com profile] 1jadedhart & my brother-in-law, my niece, my father-in-law, and one of our neighbors. Food was simple fare - burgers, hot dogs, sausage with built-in onions and peppers, grilled corn - along with some homemade salsa from [livejournal.com profile] noone234, lemon cake from [livejournal.com profile] kk1raven (we officially gave her permission to try some other kind of cake for next time, provided she also brings the lemon cake! =) [livejournal.com profile] thefrogger brought some truffles that went over very well, and our next-door neighbor made some spinach dip that was very good.

After the meal, the Lefty Valdez Band set up on the Front Porch Stage and played through the portions of tunes we know. We did a little bit of work, extending [livejournal.com profile] noone234's bass parts in The Kraken and Sorrow's End. We also worked a bit on getting Rachel a clarinet part for Breezy. Justin and I both caught our nicknames on our first session - indeed, I haven't played the right-handed-bass-strung-lefty since then, so Lefty doesn't directly apply. I suppose it's still funny, considering I'm the only Righty in the household (Mr. B. is still Undecided.) Valdez referred to the vast quantities of valve oil needed for the trumpet - which is now in the shop and will hopefully not apply in the future. Yesterday, we coined names for the other two band members. Rachel's nickname came up from her occasional blasts from the clarinet - usually when she's frustrated, but sometimes by accident as well. She is now Squeaky, a name which Mr. B delights in calling her over. And over. [livejournal.com profile] thefrogger actually suggested [livejournal.com profile] noone234's name when he mentioned a flub - thus, we now feature Flubber on alto sax, electric bass, and - someday soon - C sax.

... and this one was fairly weak to begin with. =)

Originally, I was going to take a half day of vacation and then work in the afternoon. I had a doctor's appointment up here in the morning, and Rachel had an optomotrist appointment down there in the afternoon. We were all going to head down there, and then come back when I got out of work.

Well, we were pretty sure Rachel's appointment wouldn't take that long, and in celebration of [livejournal.com profile] 1jadedhart's birthday, Deb was going to be heading right back down there in the evening.

Seemed silly to do the back and forth, or to take two cars down there.

So I went back to the original original plan, which was for me to work from home. We added the bit about Deb taking Rachel to the eye doctor, and somehow added Justin and Mr. B into the mix, so they could watch my neice. The early afternoon appointment and the later-in-the-evening trip would seem further apart, thus bearable.

The eye appointment didn't take much time, but, apparently, picking out glasses took gobs of time - even more so than the hour wait to pick them up. So it looks like Deb will be coming home and heading right out immediately, which is what we were trying to avoid.

To add to the fun, my brother and one of his brothers are supposed to be coming down here on their way to the Smokey Mountains, the Grand Canyon, Vegas, and other points of interest. Thought they were going to arrive about 3:30pm, in which case it was good I was home. They seem to be sidetracked at an American Legion post up the road and should be arriving in about half hour, in which case, Deb and the kids should be back, and, had it been a normal work day, I'd likely be home for as well.

Oh well...

Yeah, my little brother is now a year older than he was yesterday. =)

He doesn't read this (unless our mom points it out to him), so I'll have to try to get a hold of him tonight between work and celebration.

Back Home

Got back late yesterday after a couple of detours in the Delaware Water Gap to see Raymondskill Falls and Tom's Creek. My mom made a claim that Justin is an expert rock-skipper and that he can skip any size or shape rock, and he verified that at Tom's Creek. He managed to skip rocks downstream, with small waterfalls, from basin to basin. Of course, some bounced off rocks, or into and over trees on the bank, but others stayed the course. Or, with some of the odder shapes, took 90 degree turns.

Saturday my brother came down, so I got to see his new Harley. [livejournal.com profile] patrixa has a picture of me sitting on it, so if that comes out decently I'll scan it. We had Mimi's (haddock dinner for me!) for lunch, and Brother's Pizza for supper, so I got in two of the key foods that I miss most from up there.

We pulled the speaker wires out and I took those home - as Rachel and my niece Dariah took out one of my speakers, and the other is failing due to old age or (more likely) failing wiring, I'll be able to set these up and hopefully not have one or both channels cutting out on me. I also took home 20-30 of my dad's Celtic discs covering harp, fiddle, and bagpipes. I may make some of them available for others who will play them more - I will definitely be keeping some of the Chieftains and harp ones, and at least one each of the others.

The screen door was failing, so we took my mom to Home Despot to order one - she opted to have them come and measure and install later on in the week. After getting that taken care of, we went to the Apple Store to checkout laptops and other Macs. In a week or so, [livejournal.com profile] patrixa may be back online!

Later in the afternoon, Justin and I went to Mount Auburn and took 50 or so pictures. We startled a blue heron at one of the ponds - took a number of shots, several in motion, and a bunch up in a pine tree - I'll be posting those once I get them developed. Unfortunately, the falcon we saw at the tower flew into the sun and we lost him, so not even a chance of pictures there.
