Why do people say "I can never conceive of this happening here" as if the United States is some golden haven of engineering perfection? It's tragic, but bridges do fall down. What's more amazing - and harder to conceive - is the number of times things go right; that bridges stay up, tunnels don't fall on people, and buildings tend to stay built. There are so many possibilities for error, and, given the track record of your average human being, that this sort of thing doesn't happen far more often is the more wondrous thing.

I suppose I focus on this sort of thing - the engineering failure itself, not tragic loss of life - often enough that it doesn't faze me. Specifically with bridges. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to think of a time where I drove over a span of any decent size without thinking about exactly that scenario.

I think this mostly relates back to a time when the Mass Ave bridge was closed because it was of the same construction as several bridges in CT that had catastrophic failures. Perhaps it also has something to do with two friends being swallowed up the Charles River, trapped in their cars, in two separate incidents 4 years apart.

The average American doesn't have a grasp of structural engineering. Based on events such as this bridge collapse, some engineers don't don't have a grasp of the subject.

Suddenly I feel an urge to play a certain game.

You could probably just end it there. =)

Sorry, but understanding basic engineering by the public is not what causes these sorts of problems! Low priority, funding and standards is more likely. Oh, yeah, and also cheating/skimmimg without regard for the safety of others.

Witness the fiasco of the Big DIg in Boston. LOTS and Lots, one might say oodles, of engineering problems mostly caused by human greed and non-caring, NOT non-knowledge!

I get annoyed with general statements (i.e., assumptions" ) denigrating the general populace. Have you met enough people to speak so? For one thing, define "average American." Who is one? You? Country or city person? Big city or small? Red-neck or sophisticate?

Remeber, I am a wise old crone, so think carefully before you reply!

Ummm... I never said what caused the problems. In fact, I wasn't even posting about the problems themselves; I was posting about the attitude shown by the media and the public interviewed that the Golden Child of the World (aka the US of A) shouldn't have these problems because we're above it.
