And a Heron in a Pine Tree

This first one captures a great blue heron in a pine tree - it escaped there when we started it along the pond edge. A number of reasonably good pictures resulted, but, sadly, we were not able to get close enough for a really great picture.

Of course, I feel that the tree it is perched in is very beautiful even without the feathered ornamentation...

Again, beautiful pictures! I was lucky enough to have a close encounter with a blue heron a few years ago there. It was at "Willow Pond" (near the tower) and he flew back and forth across the pond a few times. They really are magnificent. I couldn't get over the wingspan and how they really are blue in a certain light. I watched him hunt on one end of the pond for quite a while too...and of course, it was one of the only times I've been there that I didn't have my camera. :)

Thanks!

I used to love to watch the herons at Waverly Oaks, but for some reason was surprised to see them in Mt. Auburn.

I misremember the name of the particular pond... might be Willow, it's near Willow Ave. It's the double-pond with the bridge in the center. Auburn Lake, maybe?

You're right, the one with the bridge is Auburn Lake. The pond that I had my Heron sighting was Willow Lake and it's kind of on the other side of the tower. When I saw him it was late autumn, probably late October/ early November when there were very few people around. It was about eight years ago and I haven't seen any there since, so I'm really glad to hear that there's one there again!
