After sticking with a few themes, the next week or so worth of videos won't have any real overarching theme, although each one may have some form of connection with the ones to either side of them.

We'll start things off with a song off an album called My Winter Storm, in hopes that I get just that and there's some snow to plow.

Tarja, the former vocalist for Nightwish, has struck out on her own and created a few albums. While some fans of the more metallic aspect of her former band feel her solo efforts are lightweight, too mellow for their refined tastes of grinding guitars and growling vocals (perhaps forgetting that Nightwish is not anywhere near as growly as they once were), there's really not all that much of a jump. For me, it seems a smaller transition, and one in a direction I enjoy listening to. If it had been labelled as the next Nightwish album, I wouldn't be caught off guard or disappointed. However, the band behind Tarja is different (I believe - I didn't actually investigate this, although it would seem silly to leave a band only to continue to record with them...), and the end result is what I had hoped for: you still get Nightwish putting out great music, and you also have Tarja doing the same.

For those who aren't already aware of who Tarja is and what she's all about, the easiest point of reference I can come up with is to compare her with Sarah Brightman. Much of Tarja's writing focuses on faerie tales, or, as with Nightwish, fantasy fiction or movies. This video presents somewhat of a Hansel and Gretelesque tale of two children wandering through the forest, although the part of the wicked witch seems to be played not nearly so wicked... at least, not from the children's point of view.

I love the opening of this, which seems loosely reminiscent of the beginning of Mozart's Requiem, and then quickly adds some wintry touches that nicely sets the mood.

As for finding the tune on CD, it's a multiple choice: the song is from Tarja's My Winter Storm album, and there's the U.S. Version and the import to choose from. There's also a CD single, but it looks like it only gives you two versions of I Walk Alone and no additional tracks. If you're going to go that route and pick up just the tune itself, the MP3 seems a better deal.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Nightwish, there's a glimpse of what they're doing these days in their video for The Islander, which I posted in early August. Of course, that just proves the whole "Tarja's solo stuff isn't as heavy as Nightwish" does not apply to every tune... =)

Whoops... a bit late, but still have a little more than an hour to go before I run out of Friday... =)
