trivial things

i watch you
from where i stand
i see you
crumble
pieces falling away
like dust motes trailed behind
and i feel
then
only sadness
only pity
for my love
i have seen upon you
and it does not drift away so easily
it is not a fragile matter
to blow away upon a gentle wind
yet it does not remain long
draped across your heart
when it is your breath that pushes it away
when you cast it from you
in your every effort trying to shatter it
and it remains
solid
yet it remains
not upon your heart
but held in my own hands
where it catches tears
and it sorrows
for it is mine
yet it belongs not to me
for it was mine to give
and to you it was granted
and still i hold it
having collected up the pieces
sometimes i think i hear you ask for its return
but i am unsure
and sometimes i offer it up once more
only to hear your refusal
and it begins to weaken
to crumble
pieces falling away
like dust motes trailing behind
to be forgotten
as are all
trivial things
