condensation condescension
by Everett A Warren

June 3, 2006

an endless ritual
where once they danced to make the waters flow
now they stomp and moan
to make them go

so wise to stop the rains
stop the flow of life
cut our throats
and rob us blind

strip the earth bare
so the waters flow
pave the world
and wonder why she floods

we cry at signs of precipitation
nothing less than
condensation
condescension

wiser souls cry out
we can control the weather
lessons learned so many years ago
still fail to teach humility

predictions fail
levees fail
and still the rains fall
but we will try again

whatever doesn't kill us
will get its chance again
as we confuse blind luck
with a learning curve

we cry at signs of precipitation
nothing less than
condensation
condescension

the air is heavy with the promise of rain
and i wait for her touch...
for the drops to dance
sliding down leaf and limb

alive with flow
the tides sing upon the shore
dry like the sand crumbling
until the waters rise once more

Seasons Shifting
by Everett A Warren

June 3, 2006

Darkness is coming
and there is an autumnal chill
in the late spring air
and the words seem to be taking me there,
somewhere on the edge of seasons
The failing oak with its ghost-grey limbs
reminds me more of winter snows
and seems to speak louder
than the bright green leaves that surround it
but the birds sing as always
remote voices reminding me
of the warmth that comes and goes
the heat of summer that parches the land
held off for a moment
as cooler breezes prevail.

Thirty and Seven
by Everett A Warren

June 3, 2006

Perhaps it is inevitable
I find now that my father's gone
That I'm more and more the adult
I was supposed to be
Perhaps it is only me
But I find echoes of him
In my decisions
Once they're made
Perhaps it is something
That was always there
That I only notice now
After he's gone
Perhaps since I can no longer see him
I seek him in me
I see where he shaped me
Where he created me
Perhaps it is time
That has helped me to learn
More of myself
More of the world

But I am not him
And it's not his path that I walk
It is my own, guided by my own star
Perhaps it is best that way
