This clip is from the movie The Mission, starring Jeremy Irons.

The tune Gabriel's Oboe, as it appears on the The Mission: Original Soundtrack From The Motion Picture, just barely starts up as this clip fades out, but what you do get to see and hear is Irons, as Gabriel, playing the theme on an oboe:



This is one of my favorite movies, and I got there via the music. Brad, who worked with me at Fishman, brought the soundtrack in for me to listen to and it instantly became one of my favorites. If you want to find out more about the it, I wrote up a review of the film in May of last year.

I missed Friday Funnies! Ooops!

If I had posted it yesterday, you would have seen this already ~ those of you who read wolfette might have seen this already, as she posted it last week:



It probably works out okay, not showing it as a "funny" because, although it has funny bits, it's not really a strict humor piece. Maybe more of a romantic comedy. The feel-good hit of the summer. Or very-late-autumn-nearly-winter, as the case may be. Enjoy!

From the movie Desperado, here's the music video version of the tune used in the title credits (at least I think that's where it comes in! =)



You can also hear it on Desperado: The Soundtrack. It's also (allegedly) on MP3 - the price isn't listed, so I don't know if it's unavailable or free (yeah, chance of the latter? not so much! =)

Although you'll see this billed as any number of different performers - the all-Steve-Vai one is popular for guitarists who believe Steve could never be beaten in a one-on-one guitar duel by anyone other than Steve his own self - the truth would be something like: Ry Cooder and William Kannensinger in the form of Ralph Macchio on screen vs. Steve Vai.

That's right, the Crossroads Blues theme comes to a head with the head cutting duel at the climax of the movie Crossroads, where ol' Willie Brown has his soul on the line, and Eugene uses his six string to keep the both of them from following Robert Johnson into the fiery pits of hell. When faced with Jack Butler, the devil's guitar slinger, Eugene needs to reach deep into his bag of tricks, and recall his earlier life as a classical guitar student at Julliard:

In a natural follow-up to yesterday's video - Apocalyptica's cover of One - we break briefly from the format of rock-played-on-orchestral-instruments, and we come to rock-played-on-rock-instruments. Of course, the reason for this is One, as performed by Metallica, from their album ...And Justice for All (Amazon.com).

Now, while this song starts with quiet textures and some beautiful melodic fretwork by Kirk Hammett that should be considered accessible to all, it does transition to some of the heaviest, most powerful work Metallica has ever done. Even if the bass - played by Jason Newstead, who had to step in to fill dearly departed Cliff Burton's unfillable shoes - was recorded with some of the most godawful lack-of-production qualities ever to see a release.

I would expect those of you who don't like such things as heavy metal, distorted guitars, and so forth to shun this video, however, I'd like you to make an exception.

This video is perhaps one of the most innovative music videos to have been made. Despite this being a "promotional video" - which is what the music companies consider music videos: advertising - the band is upstaged throughout by clips - dialogue and all - from the 1971 movie Johnny Got His Gun (IMDB) which is based on the book (Amazon.com) of the same name. The clips are powerful and graphic.

Several themes - and critical issues - are brought up. War: "For democracy, any man would give his only begotten son." The end product of war: "Inside me I'm screaming, nobody pays any attention. If I had arms, I could kill myself. If I had legs, I could run away. If I had a voice, I could talk and be some kind of company for myself. I could yell for help, but nobody would help me." Medical ethics, euthanasia, and extraordinary measures to sustain life: "He eats through a tube. And whatever comes in through a tube has to go out through a tube. He is the armless, legless wonder of the twentieth century. And yet, by God, he's just as alive as you and me."

This should not be watched lightly, but I feel it should be watched. Then again, those who most need to be moved by this are very likely amongst those who would never watch it - and, just as likely from what I know of you, not amongst those who are viewing this on your Friends page.

Welcome to Monday's Thirteen, the movie quote guessing game.

Answers will be screened. Those who guess correctly will have their name listed with the quote as soon as I can. More than one person can claim a quote, so the movie's name won't be revealled until the weekend game-end.

On Wednesday, some additional hints will be posted for leftover Double Quotes (two-week veterans of the game). Any surviving Triple Quotes will get their hint from the prior week sorted out and matched up. Fridays will see any unguessed Triple Quotes matched with another quote.

Anything that makes it to four weeks is probably too difficult for you all to guess is a real challenge. It will be elevated to Sudden Death status - the first correct guess gets the credit for it, and, unlike earlier stages of the game, subsequent guesses just don't count for squat.
