Looking for a Certain Movie...

~ They played it at public school back in the late seventies/early eighties.

~ It was probably a short film.

~ It was probably to educate us about nuclear attack, but it could have been about alien abduction (which makes no sense as to why they'd show it to us every year...)

~ It was basically about the anticipation of something. At they end, they open a door and the whole screen flashes to white and it ends.

I think.

Any ideas?

Avast Ye!

In honour of the day, we are watching documentaries about pirates!

First up, the second most accurate film about life at sea, that documentary, Muppet Treasure Island.

Later, we're likely to watch the (rather dry) but incredibly accurate and detailed biopic about Yellowbeard.

We might also watch Pirates, Hook, and Cutthroat Island.

There's also the Pirates of the Caribbean films:The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man's Chest, and At World's End.

We could also open up to movies that have some piratical elements or take things off into outer space, as with The Ice Pirates, Treasure Planet, Castle in the Sky, The Goonies, or Porco Rosso.

Of course, there's also The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything for Mr. B.

~ ~ ~

We may also entertain ourselves by playing Pirate's Cove or Cartagena.

There's also the sequels to Cartagena, The Pirate's Nest, Die Goldinsel, and Die Mueterei, but I haven't played any of those yet.

~ ~ ~

So, what's everyone else doing for Talk Like a Pirate Day?

Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Gray Part XI

Back to the officially sanctioned video for Part XI, the penultimate portion of A Pleasant Shade of Gray:

Do you think that I, that I remember
Do you think that I, that I recall
When you were falling
And I just watched it all?

Do you think that I, that I remember
Do you think that I, that I recall
When you were breaking
And I just let the pieces fall?

Don't you think that I remember
Don't you think that I recall
When you were alone, oh all alone
And I didn't hear, hear your call?
Call - Hear you call, hear you call, hear you call...

Judas Priest - Before the Dawn

Complete with heart effect transitions from scene to scene, the visuals from this 2001 romantic holiday comedy, Serendipity (starring Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack) fit fairly well with the music from the 1979 album Hell Bent for Leather (to be even more provocative, you could go with the title of the same album from the original 1978 UK release: Killing Machine)...

So, yes, a sweet, tender love song, filled with emotion and longing, and some beautiful music, coming from an album that is titled to reinforce an entirely different side of the Priest... here's Before The Dawn:

The Mission - Falls

Today's, tune Falls has that breathy South American flute/pan pipe sound, and it's presence is probably the main reason Brad thought to introduce me to The Mission: Original Soundtrack From The Motion Picture.

Unlike yesterday's clip, which includes sound and music in sync, this one features a variety of scenes from throughout The Mission over the music for the Falls scene.

There are definitely spoilers to the film here, and you see more than just Jeremy Irons. Co-star Robert de Niro makes an appearance, as does Liam Neeson, along with other actors beyond the Guarani that are perhaps the bulk of the cast.

The Mission - Gabriel's Oboe

This clip is from the movie The Mission, starring Jeremy Irons.

The tune Gabriel's Oboe, as it appears on the The Mission: Original Soundtrack From The Motion Picture, just barely starts up as this clip fades out, but what you do get to see and hear is Irons, as Gabriel, playing the theme on an oboe:

This is one of my favorite movies, and I got there via the music. Brad, who worked with me at Fishman, brought the soundtrack in for me to listen to and it instantly became one of my favorites. If you want to find out more about the it, I wrote up a review of the film in May of last year.

The Real Ghostbusters

I was poking through some tv collections on DVD over at Amazon, and I discovered something that may interest a few folks out there:

The Real Ghostbusters, Vol 1 (5 DVD) is coming out at the end of March, and it's available for pre-order.

I know there's at least one Ghostbusters fan out there who might be reading this... although if I recall, they aren't all that impressed with the cartoon series...

I never watched it, so I have no idea... =)

Validation

I missed Friday Funnies! Ooops!

If I had posted it yesterday, you would have seen this already ~ those of you who read [livejournal.com profile] wolfette might have seen this already, as she posted it last week:

It probably works out okay, not showing it as a "funny" because, although it has funny bits, it's not really a strict humor piece. Maybe more of a romantic comedy. The feel-good hit of the summer. Or very-late-autumn-nearly-winter, as the case may be. Enjoy!

Friday Funnies

Despite the fact that the theme was just established earlier today, this Friday Funny is, to break the trend, surprisingly on theme.

Maybe even too much so.

=)

You can buy it to watch here or to listen to here.

Antonio Banderas - Cancion del Mariachi

From the movie Desperado, here's the music video version of the tune used in the title credits (at least I think that's where it comes in! =)

You can also hear it on Desperado: The Soundtrack. It's also (allegedly) on MP3 - the price isn't listed, so I don't know if it's unavailable or free (yeah, chance of the latter? not so much! =)

Star Wars, mildly irreverent.

Okay, not so mildly.

Appreciation of or absolute hatred of gangsta rap makes this all the more entertaining.

Cut on account of NSFWness... )

Headcuttin' at the Crossroads

Although you'll see this billed as any number of different performers - the all-Steve-Vai one is popular for guitarists who believe Steve could never be beaten in a one-on-one guitar duel by anyone other than Steve his own self - the truth would be something like: Ry Cooder and William Kannensinger in the form of Ralph Macchio on screen vs. Steve Vai.

That's right, the Crossroads Blues theme comes to a head with the head cutting duel at the climax of the movie Crossroads, where ol' Willie Brown has his soul on the line, and Eugene uses his six string to keep the both of them from following Robert Johnson into the fiery pits of hell. When faced with Jack Butler, the devil's guitar slinger, Eugene needs to reach deep into his bag of tricks, and recall his earlier life as a classical guitar student at Julliard:

Metallica - One

In a natural follow-up to yesterday's video - Apocalyptica's cover of One - we break briefly from the format of rock-played-on-orchestral-instruments, and we come to rock-played-on-rock-instruments. Of course, the reason for this is One, as performed by Metallica, from their album ...And Justice for All (Amazon.com).

Now, while this song starts with quiet textures and some beautiful melodic fretwork by Kirk Hammett that should be considered accessible to all, it does transition to some of the heaviest, most powerful work Metallica has ever done. Even if the bass - played by Jason Newstead, who had to step in to fill dearly departed Cliff Burton's unfillable shoes - was recorded with some of the most godawful lack-of-production qualities ever to see a release.

I would expect those of you who don't like such things as heavy metal, distorted guitars, and so forth to shun this video, however, I'd like you to make an exception.

This video is perhaps one of the most innovative music videos to have been made. Despite this being a "promotional video" - which is what the music companies consider music videos: advertising - the band is upstaged throughout by clips - dialogue and all - from the 1971 movie Johnny Got His Gun (IMDB) which is based on the book (Amazon.com) of the same name. The clips are powerful and graphic.

Several themes - and critical issues - are brought up. War: "For democracy, any man would give his only begotten son." The end product of war: "Inside me I'm screaming, nobody pays any attention. If I had arms, I could kill myself. If I had legs, I could run away. If I had a voice, I could talk and be some kind of company for myself. I could yell for help, but nobody would help me." Medical ethics, euthanasia, and extraordinary measures to sustain life: "He eats through a tube. And whatever comes in through a tube has to go out through a tube. He is the armless, legless wonder of the twentieth century. And yet, by God, he's just as alive as you and me."

This should not be watched lightly, but I feel it should be watched. Then again, those who most need to be moved by this are very likely amongst those who would never watch it - and, just as likely from what I know of you, not amongst those who are viewing this on your Friends page.

Watch, discuss.

Monday's Thirteen: Episode Fifteen

Welcome to Monday's Thirteen, the movie quote guessing game.

Answers will be screened. Those who guess correctly will have their name listed with the quote as soon as I can. More than one person can claim a quote, so the movie's name won't be revealled until the weekend game-end.

On Wednesday, some additional hints will be posted for leftover Double Quotes (two-week veterans of the game). Any surviving Triple Quotes will get their hint from the prior week sorted out and matched up. Fridays will see any unguessed Triple Quotes matched with another quote.

Anything that makes it to four weeks is probably too difficult for you all to guess is a real challenge. It will be elevated to Sudden Death status - the first correct guess gets the credit for it, and, unlike earlier stages of the game, subsequent guesses just don't count for squat. Instead of waiting for the weekend, I'll expose the winners *and the movies* for Sudden Death quotes as soon as I can. Sudden Death quotes will also get the benefit of an extra quote Tuesday through Friday in an attempt to get rid of them and make room for something easier that you folks can handle new.

Enjoy!
