smudge
By Everett A Warren
August 21, 2007
if i should chance
to see the world
in shades of black and white
leave it to the rain
to bring shades of grey
to blur the distance
smudge the edges
ripple my reflection
the solid made less so
water soluble like a
moist supernova
expanding until it
dissolves
leaving what remains
floating in solution
until surface tensions relax
and wash it all away
you see things
for what they are
as they pirouette
with the flow
as they cling
parasitic
as they thrash
in fear
that they are
who they think
they are
and
don't
want to be
and when the sun
comes out
rainbow smiles
disguise sullen hearts
as their heat dries the earth
turns to desert
at their touch
