Or something like that.

I have in my possession the set of Nine Man Morris/The King and the Knights. The gentleman from Old Time Games stopped the order from shipping to check if I worked locally to the valley, which, of course I do. In the middle of a stop-and-go thunderstorm series (4" in an hour and a half, a co-worker reported; I countered that that really was more than that - those inches fell in a handful of 2-5 minute long cloudbursts,) I drove over to his house, picked up the game, and forecasted some weather changes accurately.

It was pouring up until a block away, then stopped enough for me to get to the porch without getting wet. He kind of reminded me of my dad's father - a craftsman in the old sense. I wondered if he made the wooden figurines and so forth - all pointing to a heritage in Scandinavian and Germanic realms - I'm willing to bet he did. Just as I opened the door to head out, the downpour (mark iv, IIRC) started again. He offered umbrellas and assistance on getting to the car, but the game board was felt (in a cardboard tube) and I didn't want to get it wet at all. I guessed it would be stopping soon enough, so we stood on the porch talking for a few moments. The rain drastically let up, and then a minute or so later stopped completely. As I was bringing the stuff out to the car, he joked that I should get a job as a weatherman - I didn't mention that accuracy isn't needed in that career!

I had a similar wait-and-run experience once I got home - Justin came out with an umbrella, but it was pouring down, sideways, and probably up, so umbrellas just didn't cut it. I sat in the car for about 10 minutes, and, just when I was about to give up, so did the downpour. I played both games with both of the older kids - they take just a few minutes to explain, and in all cases we could pretty much jump into playing after a short explanation.

Although I won all four games, I thought for sure that Justin was going to wipe me off the face of the earth in Nine Man Morris - after he brought me rather quickly from 9 pieces to 3, I finally whittled him down to 3 as well, and then out-maneuvered him to get the win. Rachel actually held her own against me significantly better than I had against Justin, but once I started to get pieces, it was over fairly quickly. Much fun to be had.

The kubb game is due to arrive tomorrow, and Thursday after work I pick up the quoits over in Easton.

While all those games will be there from here on out, a friend of a co-worker will be bringing a bunch of board games to the cookout on Sunday.
