Roots
April 17, 2005

Unfolding,
origami
undone;
yet
complete
and
more:
beyond
complete,
beautiful
beyond
compare,
pure
potential
itself:
limitless,
infinite,
eternal
horizons.

Reaching,
climbing,
aspiring
to
heaven,
to
sun,
moon,
and
stars:
but
never
losing
touch:
grounded,
gripping
tight,
for
that
is
where
growth
begins:
beneath
the
surface
where
no
one
sees.

Mass Hole Theory
April 17, 2005

Something for nothing,
it’s always the selling point.
This is worth that,
special offers
not withstanding,
act now and here’s
something else
to go along with it.
Twice the value
for half the price,
how can you go wrong?

It’s not a mirror,
and, unfortunately,
it’s not a mirage;
it just is.
Knowing that
which is too good to be true
is neither true nor good
has no bearing whatsoever
on the matter at hand.
Virtues are nothing
without slick packaging
and a good soundbyte.

Mass media controlling
mass marketing controlling
mass consumption controlling
mass delusions controlling
mass hysteria controlling
mass destruction controlling
mass hypocrisy controlling
mass media controlling…

Perceptions
weigh more
than Truth.

Executive Retreat
April 17, 2005

It was a long, cold winter
but spring has come at last.
I speak authoritatively on the subject
for I have suffered much
in bitter exile,
sipping frozen margaritas poolside
by the white sand beaches.
With each sip the cold courses through my veins,
and I can truly say I feel your pain.

The Barrow-Wights Wheelbarrow Race
April 17, 2005

When I was walking the Wilds one day
I did see the strangest of sights:
a wheelbarrow race held by barrow-wights!

They made lanes, lined with bales of hay
and with flags and banners of old,
the wheelbarrows all bright and dressed with gold!

A wild crowd cheered them on their way,
and one o' them Fernys collected wagers,
attempting to fleece unwitting strangers!

Place my money upon lane three, I say;
for the crown-clad runner was strong
and the rider, naught but bones to be carried along!

Strong was the runner, kept the pack at bay,
for he could run circles ‘round ‘bout
the barrows, and all the while he did shout:

“Speed is of the essence, no, don’t delay!”
Not too bright, I assume, to know of the race
but not to realise ‘twas he who set the pace.

But it takes little brains, I always say,
to run to here and back, for forever and a day;
Yea, inevitable, I won the lot – harder, though, to make a Ferny pay!

A Poisonous Relationship
April 17, 2005

She’s stalking me,
I know.
Trailing behind me,
clinging.

A touch, and all is lost.
Under my skin,
all hopes lost
as I sink deep within.

Tangled in her sinuous ways,
pinned down,
here, there, and everywhere;
I would run if I could.

Just when I think she’s gone for good
I catch a glimpse.
Behind a whisper she could hide,
but she spreads herself too thin.

And when I hold her tight
she kicks her heels and digs in,
wrapped around me but refusing
to let go.

And I wait long after she has gone
for the signs.
She won’t let me forget
the pain.

“Ivy,” I say to her, “it’s time we say goodbye.”
But I know, under leaf and loam, she lays waiting, spreading, waiting…
